(Remember, you are writing this for reviewers, not your future clients, so be candid regarding your assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the competition.)
What is the major market for the book? If this is a textbook, for what course is the book intended? What type of student, at what level takes this course? Do you offer this course yourself? What is the average number of students that you teach in this course? What other institutions and instructors may be interested in adopting this text?
What is your timetable for completing the book? What percentage of the material is now complete? Has any material been previously published? (Note: We only accept manuscripts that contain limited amounts of previously published material, and authors will be responsible for securing permission for previously published parts of the manuscript). Is your proposal being considered for publication by any other press(es)?
Include a CV or an academic biography. Be sure to include in it a list of any books that you previously have published, and any information about why you are qualified to write this book.
Select and send to us two of your best written chapters that are an integral part of the book.
Send a list of about four potential peer reviewers, with whom you have no personal or professional relationship, but who might advise us as to the quality, academic integrity, and commercial viability of the project. If possible, include their affiliations, telephone numbers, and email addresses.
Because emails can be lost, be sure to keep copies of the materials that you send, and feel free to contact the editor if you have not had received a response in four weeks. Please do not send your entire manuscript unless requested by the acquisitions editor.
